Training

The Decarceration Project conducts regular trainings for Legal Aid Society staff throughout the five boroughs of New York City. Each year we train an incoming class of new attorneys on the nuances of New York’s bail statute, and provide them with the tools to vigorously defend their clients when the begin their careers in the trial offices. Our attorneys have also conducted trainings around the country and across New York state.

Our trainings range from Bail Law 101 to more complex trainings covering writs of habeas corpus and the constitutionality of money bail. We also train on the use of risk assessment instruments and the legal and ethical issues raised by their implementation.
