The Decarceration Project is a leading voice in bail reform efforts in New York City and across New York state. For the past year and a half we have worked with legislators at City Hall as well as in Albany to lend our clients and impacted communities a voice in the reform process. We have worked closely with the New York City Council and Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to develop and implement local legislation that directly benefits our clients. Our staff has recently testified in favor of algorithmic accountability, on the need to regulate the bail bonds industry, and for closing Rikers Island.
We also work closely with community coalitions. We are part of a local bail bond accountability coalition, the #CLOSErikers campaign, Justleaderhip’s #FREEny campaigns, and sit on a working-group convened by Katal. As part of our policy work, we host regular meetings of New York City’s public defense organizations to coordinate and organize for bail reform.
